Chang is my mother's uncle. I call him "granduncle". He now hold a position in PRC, Mainland China, and seems to be very powerful. Having been leaving Taiwan for a long time, he plans to go back to Taiwan this coming Friday to worship ancestors.
I knew from my mom his legend which is built upon tense cross-straight relation between Taiwan and PRC. He traveled to mainland China in 1948 and joined Communist Party. Now he is a Taiwanese Vice President of a People House, PRC.
Despite recent criticisms and praises, I'd like to say some unproven annecdotes. His Taiwanese identity had not been known to the public until 1990s. Why? and how could he come back to Taiwan in 1990s? My mom played an important role in this story.
Chang once visited Japan in 1980s. At that time, one of my granduncles, my grandpa's brother, also lived there, and ran a successful business in real estate. So, Chang stayed in my granduncle's place. My granduncle was a really good host. He treated Chang very well. One night, Chang was so nostalgic in the feast, and mentioned that his hometown was so far away, in some place called "ChangTsu" (Chang's Family) in Changhua, Taiwan. My grandpa immediately thought of my mom because she is also a member of ChangTsu. Having leaving home for such a long time, more than 30 years, Chang was elated knowing something about his family. Then, out of homesickness, he told my granduncle that he would like to go home, and hoped my granduncle could lend him a hand.
